The Toltec civilization was a Mesoamerican culture that ruled a state centered on Tula, Hidalgo, Mexico, in the Early Postclassic period of Mesoamerican chronology (ca. 900–1168 AD). Later, Aztec art and culture regarded the Toltecs as their intellectual and cultural predecessors and described the Toltec culture that emanated from Tōllān (Nahuatl for Tula) as the epitome of civilization; in Nahuatl, the word Tōltēcatl (singular) or Tōltēcah (plural) came to mean “artisan.” Aztec art, in its oral and pictographic tradition, also described the history of the Toltec Empire, giving lists of rulers and their deeds.
