Gold Statues

Warm, mirror-bright and often answered by silver: gold sculptures finished by hand in 24-karat gold in our Mexico City workshop, from leopard cubs and Thai deer to Frida Kahlo's sun, Dalí's spoons and the Aztec calendar.

Where gold meets silver

Few pieces in this collection are gold alone. The Gold Thai Deer Statue - Great Sambar Deer rests with its legs folded, a gold body under an ornate silver saddle cloth and tall silver antlers; the sambar is a large deer of South and Southeast Asia. The Female Beta Fish Sculpture in Gold trails flowing silver fins from a gold body.

The Gold Egyptian Scarab Sculpture is divided down the middle, half gold and half silver; in ancient Egypt the scarab was linked to the rising sun and to renewal. The Sun mask sets a silver face inside a ring of flame-like gold rays. In each case the gold warms and the silver brightens, which is why these pieces sit as easily beside silver as beside dark wood.

Pure volumes, warm light

Other pieces let the gold speak with nothing added. The Totontli penguin and the UFO vase are smooth, closed volumes that hold a room's reflection the way still water does. The Gold Skull Figure Tzompantli by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, with its deep, rounded eye sockets, recalls the tzompantli, the skull rack of Mexica temples; it was created with the architect of the National Museum of Anthropology in his lifetime.

The animals carry more detail. The Gold Indian Elephant Statue raises its trunk above finely wrinkled skin, the leopard cubs lie down or sit up in gold marked with dark rosettes, and the swan lifts its wings in layered feathers. A gold leopard statue on a dark shelf becomes the warmest point of the room, above all in evening light.

Frida, Dalí, Mexico and the couple

The Sun and The Moon Sculpture Frida Kahlo is a pair: a gold sun face and a silver crescent moon rising on dark, root-like stems over round black bases. Frida painted The Broken Column in 1944, and both pieces are made working with her family. The Chair with Culleretes (Spoons) by Salvador Dalí sets gold spoons on a silver frame, made under a licence approved by the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí.

Mexico's history appears in a gold Aztec calendar disc set on rough dark stone, a replica of the Sun Stone found in 1790 beneath the city's main square, and in Cuauhtémoc, the last Mexica ruler, who defended Tenochtitlan in 1521. Integration - Groom & Bride Statue fits two tall abstract figures together, one gold and one silver, a theme the wedding rings couple continues.

Frequently asked questions

Which gold sculptures suit a wedding or an anniversary?

Integration, with its gold and silver figures fitted together, and the Wedding Rings Couple Statue were conceived around two people, which makes them natural wedding and anniversary gifts. Frida Kahlo's Sun and Moon, a pair by design, carries the same idea. Our Wedding gifts page gathers more.

Why do so many pieces combine gold and silver?

The contrast lets each detail read clearly: silver antlers on the gold Thai deer, silver fins on the betta fish, the scarab split in two. It also makes a 24k gold statue easier to place in a home that already holds silver pieces, since the two finishes answer each other.

How is a gold finish looked after?

Each piece is protected by a resistant lacquer, so a soft, dry cloth keeps it as it is; metal polish and cleaning agents are best avoided. An art advisor can show any piece on a video call, and we ship throughout Mexico from Mexico City.
