Human Sculptures

Human sculptures in silver and 24-karat gold, from the geometric faces of ancient Mexico to couples, parents and devotional images, with pieces by Salvador Dalí, Frida Kahlo and Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, all finished by hand in Mexico City.

Pieces from $3,220 to $505,800 MXN

From the almost abstract to the literal

Some of the oldest ideas here look the most modern. The Mezcala culture of ancient Guerrero reduced the body to a few planes, and the Tall Mezcala Silver Human Sculpture keeps that economy: a tall, flat silver form whose face is a handful of lines. The Silver Kissing Heads Statue works the same way, two block-like profiles in satin silver meeting nose to nose.

Further along the range the figures gain detail and voice. A broad-faced Olmec head, the face of Pakal, ruler of Palenque, and Pedro Ramírez Vázquez's Tzompantli skull, cut into angular facets of mirror-polished gold, lead into our Prehispanic and Mayan art. A torero in his black montera and a jimador leaning on his coa over a green agave bring the figure into Mexico today.

Couples, parents and the shape of an embrace

Integration - Groom & Bride Statue sets two tall, faceted figures against each other, one in 24-karat gold and one in silver, interlocking on a round black base: a couple statue that reads as one form from across a room. Other couples are slender silver figures twisting upward, closer to a flame than to a portrait, and they belong as naturally to abstract sculpture as to this collection.

In the Silver Woman Statue "Full Moon" a woman arches inside a large open silver ring, a woman sculpture about balance as much as the body. The Fatherhood Father & Child Silver Sculpture and its companion on motherhood are ribbon-like silver curves rising from black bases, the child a matte dark-grey form held within them.

Dalí, Frida and the sacred image

Salvador Dalí painted Metamorphosis of Narcissus in 1937, and the Metamorphosis of Narcissus Hand Sculpture by Salvador Dalí turns it into a tall silver hand holding a gold egg from which a small flower sprouts. Frida painted The Broken Column in 1944, after spinal surgery; The Broken Column - Frida Kahlo opens a silver torso to show a copper-toned column held by gold straps, with silver drapery at the hips.

The devotional pieces are quieter. The Silver Virgin Of Guadalupe 24K Gold Solar Rays sets colour on her mantle inside a border of gold rays, the image that, by tradition, appeared to Juan Diego at Tepeyac in 1531. A serene silver Buddha and a smiling bust of John Paul II widen the theme, and our Catholic and Christian art gathers more.

Frequently asked questions

Which human sculpture suits a wedding or an anniversary?

Integration, its gold and silver figures locked together, is made for a wedding; the slender couples and the Kissing Heads suit an anniversary. Fatherhood and its motherhood companion mark a birth or a new family. Our wedding gifts collection gathers more pieces in the same spirit.

Are the Dalí and Frida Kahlo pieces authorised?

Yes. D'Argenta's Salvador Dalí sculptures are made under a licence approved by the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, and the Frida Kahlo sculpture is made working with Frida Kahlo's family. The Pedro Ramírez Vázquez pieces were created with the architect, designer of the National Museum of Anthropology, in his lifetime.

How should a silver figure be looked after?

Every piece is protected by a resistant lacquer, so a soft, dry cloth keeps it bright; metal polish and cleaning agents are best avoided. All pieces carry our lifetime guarantee covering manufacturing defects, and we ship throughout Mexico from Mexico City.
