Matte black bull sculpture on a console, against the light

Matte Black Sculptures

Matte black takes away the reflections and leaves the form: animal sculptures in a deep charcoal finish with a soft, low sheen, where silhouette, muscle and texture do all the talking.

What a matte finish shows

A mirror finish shows the room; a matte one shows the sculpture. Our matte black sculptures are a deep charcoal with a soft, low sheen, so the eye reads outline and surface instead of reflections. Wrinkled skin, engraved stripes, the patches of a giraffe and the ridge of a shoulder all come forward in a way that bright silver sometimes hides.

That is also why matte black decor and black animal statues work so well in modern, minimal and industrial interiors. Against a white wall or pale stone, each piece becomes a drawing in three dimensions, and several of them together read as a single, quiet group.

Bulls, elephants and giraffes

The Black Bull Statue is listed as a unique piece by D'Argenta artist Claudio Rodríguez: a toro bravo, the Iberian fighting bull bred in Spain and Mexico, standing squarely under long, upswept horns. The Black Copper Charging Bull Statue is its opposite in mood, the massive head lowered mid-charge and every muscle of the neck and shoulders sharply defined.

For black elephant decor, the Black Elephant Figurine Trunk Up lifts its trunk high, deeply wrinkled, with white tusks, while its companion walks with ears spread and the trunk curled over its head. The giraffes, the tallest land animals, come as a pair: the Black Giraffe Statue Standing Father stands tall and straight, while the mother bends her long neck right down, their patches textured into the surface.

A retriever, cubs, a shark and a running horse

The Black Golden Retriever sits upright, smooth and almost life-like, its long, soft ears falling forward. The breed was developed in Scotland in the nineteenth century as a gundog; here it is simply rendered in black, so the shape of a familiar dog becomes something closer to a sculpture than a portrait. A tiger cub lies stretched out with engraved stripes, a leopard cub sits upright with spots cut deep into its coat, and a long, streamlined shark is frozen mid-glide.

A few more pieces complete the group. A black swan opens flowing, ribbon-like wings, the Indian elephant wears a saddle cloth in silver, and the Running Black Horse Statue gallops over a rocky base. Our Elephant statues and Bull statues pages show these animals in other finishes.

Frequently asked questions

Is matte black harder to look after than silver?

No. A resistant lacquer protects the finish, so a soft, dry cloth is all it needs; metal polish and cleaning agents are best avoided. Each piece carries our lifetime guarantee covering manufacturing defects.

Why a golden retriever in black?

The piece treats the familiar shape of the breed as pure form: a sculpture of a golden retriever finished in matte black, designed and finished by hand in Mexico City. The colour belongs to the sculpture, not to the dog, and our Dog statues page gathers more dogs.

Can I see the finish before ordering?

Yes. Matte surfaces change with light, so an art advisor can show you any piece on a video call. D'Argenta has worked in Mexico City since 1976 and ships throughout Mexico.
