Painting of The Broken Column by Frida Kahlo. A true work of art, a consequence of the traffic accident in which Frida was injured. It is a very painful depiction of her mental and physical state during the recovery stage after spinal surgery. The operation was a success, but it left her bedridden and "enclosed" in a metal corset to alleviate her pain. The painting portrays Frida Kahlo standing in the middle of a cracked landscape. Her torso is confined by metal belts and fabric that prevent her body from collapsing. Fragility is manifested in her torso, through the image of a fractured Ionic column on the verge of collapse.

Frida's head rests on the capital. Although her face is bathed in tears, it reflects no sign of pain. The attitude she presents is the one she always showed to life itself: strong and defiant to the viewer. The nails piercing her body are a symbol of the constant pain she faced. Large nails, driven into the Broken Column, show the magnitude of the damage caused by the 1925 accident. Those on the left side of her chest refer instead to emotional pain, to her feeling of loneliness. She described herself as a solitary being, and gave the reason: she was alone, and she knew herself best.
