Its origin dates back to 1961. In Paris "Cine México", the journalist Benjamín Ortega, father of the journalist Guillermo Ortega Ruiz, instituted the Xochiquetzal or Xochipilli, as a stimulus to the most outstanding works in the various specialties of the Fílmic Queo.

But in 1962, given the impossibility of sponsoring the delivery annually, Ortega gave the Figurilla to film journalists from Mexico (Pecime), whose partners decided to stylize the initially male figure and change the name. The feather and robe dictated that of the silver goddess, plus they were later bathed in gold.

An amalgamation of figures from Aztec mythology, the award represents the God of creation, fertility, the arts, wisdom and perseverance; Hence the elements that compose it: the spike, the turtle on which the sphinx (symbol of wisdom) is planted, the snake and the feather.

To guarantee the continuity of its delivery, the partners raised the possibility that each sculpture bear the name of a celebrity willing to cover its cost.

Gabriel Figueroa, Luis Buñuel, Mario Moreno Cantinflas and María Félix accepted the treatment, but, in the Assembly held on June 13, 1962, the Directive Committee decided to absorb the production costs as it occurs to date.

The first installment of silver squats was recorded on March 8, 1963 at the Hotel María Isabel. Tlayucan (1961), Ribbon by Luis Alcoriza, made by Matouk, SA, was the first to obtain it.
